We were approached by Spanish-based organisation Fair Saturday to help launch Scotland’s first ever ‘St Andrew Fair Saturday’, supported by The Scottish Government.
This short one-day tour saw the orchestra give six performances in just one day in venues across Edinburgh. We revisited old friends at Social Bite Village and Edinburgh Airport, met new ones at Souper Saturday and Thistle Foundation, performed in our third Erskine Home, and finished with the concert at The Queen’s Hall alongside the Sociedad Coral de Bilbao.
A few days later, Nevis musicians performed at Edinburgh Airport and on the Edinburgh Trams as part of the launch.
Nevis is a ground-breaking musical and social enterprise that defies the conventions of orchestral performance. Its inclusivity can have a huge impact on the sector by engaging new audiences and showing them that live music exists and that it matters. Makes musicians into more empathetic, compassionate worldly citizens!
It grows you as a person as much as it transforms the audiences you play to. You become more open to new ideas and surroundings.’YeYe Xu, violin
Fair Saturday exists to allow artists to support social organisations as a response against Black Friday, encouraging communities to come together, rather than seek out consumerism.
As such we gave performances for two homeless centres, a care home for older veterans, and at an event launching a community defibrillator in memory of a local man who had recently died of a heart attack. Not the kind of community spaces you would normally expect a full orchestra to be playing Bartók – and that is why we go.
