Nevis Ensemble is thrilled to announce auditions to join the orchestra for its inaugural tour around Scotland as part of Glasgow 2018.

Interested musicians are asked to complete the Application Form, as well as the Equalities Monitoring Form, and return by email to by Friday 23 March 2018.

Auditions will take place on 9 April 2018 (with an extra day on 11 April if necessary) in Glasgow. Please note that not all applicants will be guaranteed an audition.

The audition shall last around 20 minutes and will include:

  • Short programme of around 8 mins (candidate’s own choice)
  • One orchestral excerpt (list shown in advance)
  • Creative exercise
  • Short discussion

We are looking to recruit 40 orchestral musicians on the following instruments:

violin x13 | viola x4 | ‘cello x4 | double bass x3 (one player doubling electric bass) | flute x2 | oboe x2 | clarinet x2 | bassoon x2 | saxophone x2 | trumpet x2 | trombone x1 | French horn  x2 | percussion x1 |

Musicians should be available between 27 July and 13 August (inclusive) for an intense tour of 70 performances focusing in communities around Glasgow, whilst taking in other parts of Scotland as well. This position is non-paid, but Nevis will cover all travel expenses, subsistence and accommodation for participants over the course of the tour. Generally, we would expect our musicians to be at the outset of their careers (perhaps studying or just out of study), with an age range of 18-26, although anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to apply. Musicians who have not had a standard entry into the industry are particular encouraged.

The only prerequisites of any Nevis Ensemble musician is that that they be creative, open-minded and collaborative. And above all, open to a challenge.

For 2018, Nevis Ensemble is partnering with a number organisations and institutions to recruit players such as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; National Youth Orchestras of Scotland; Ricciotti Ensemble (Amsterdam); Street Orchestra of London; Live Music Now Berlin. Scottish-based musicians currently attending the RCS or playing with NYOS should note this on the application form.

Please feel free to enquire at if you have any questions about your application.

The Nevis Ensemble (Artistic Directors, Holly Mathieson and Jon Hargreaves) is different. There’s nothing else quite like it in Scotland. Its vision is ‘music for everyone, everywhere’. And it means business. For musicians, we provide training in working for particular groups, the opportunity to be part of an innovative, fun ensemble, and the chance to change the face of orchestral music in Scotland. Performances for 2018 will include everything from Glasgow’s Central Station to the summit of Ben Nevis (yes, really), as well as performing for outdoor yoga sessions, at community barbecues in the forests, and at large-scale life-drawing events.

Full-scale, 40-piece orchestral performances of the best, most diverse music you can imagine (including a commission from RCS composer Matthew Grouse): popping up and surprising commuters first thing in the morning; entertaining residents in oft-forgotten parts of the city; guerrilla-style appearances in swimming pools; generating huge public audiences in public spaces. Running in parallel to a fast-and-furious public pop-up performance schedule, is a carefully plotted patchwork of community-based performances, in a range of contexts covering all parts of society in a tour around Scotland taking in 70 performances over two weeks.

Come and join us; it’s an experience you wont forget!
